Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
My FB feed is now full of notifications from schools saying they’re not opening tomorrow due to teachers refusing to attend.

Yes but f you actually knew her you would know that she spent much of it on maternity leave ( 3 boys a year or two apart) , part time working and the. full time union roles while on secondment from her employer school . but of course her profile might skip over this ..slowsider wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 5:14 pmSnidey comments? Yes.Gedge wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 4:42 pmIt would kill you to just admit you jumped in both feet first and got it wrong ...are you sure you aren’t female?
I guessed (along with Slowsider) the wrong person, based on having seen her in the union magazine for many years, and heard and seen her interviewed many times too.
Now, back to you. We're seeing a massive rise in positive tests, many of the variant that is more likely to be contracted by children. We already have hospitals under extreme pressure. Is it really sensible to get groups of children mixing together, etc, further spreading infections (I posted the by age figures a day or two back)?
And, don't forget, the government has consistently stated that they are guided by the science. So isn't it confusing that they are unwilling to release the evidence and advice on schools?
Here's a few predictions:
- the govt won't back down (immediately)
- several schools (outside of those already told not to eg London) will not open, except for key worker's children, etc. This may because of staff shortages or safety concerns (I've heard of three locally, but seen those confirmed)
- Boris has said today that further restrictions are likely. That, if it happens, will be in days rather than weeks. Of course, any union pressure whether either of the main teaching unions or the heads') will not have been an influence

If she had done it for the Federation no doubt you would skip over it too.

Until it's sensible to do so?
I'm sure they think it's irrelevant in NZ and most of Oz too, doesn't mean it's sensible here though.

What's the infection rates there, by age breakdown, so we can compare them with here?
Do you have the new, more contagious, variant there yet?

Harry wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 5:43 pmDunno.
Probably.
It's just business as usual with sensible precautions and wearings masks if you leave the house.
Positive cases are still being reported, but I still don't know anyone, that knows anyone, that has died from it.
Everyone is just getting on with life here, it's a fairly moan free place anyway, so people are just getting on with it.
Government censored press. Always the sign of happy people in a well run country.
According to human rights organisations, the government of the UAE violates a number of fundamental human rights. The UAE does not have democratically elected institutions and citizens do not have the right to change their government or to form political parties. There are reports of forced disappearances in the UAE, many foreign nationals and Emirati citizens have been abducted by the UAE government and illegally detained and tortured in undisclosed locations. In numerous instances, the UAE government has tortured people in custody (especially expats and political dissidents), and has denied their citizens the right to a speedy trial and access to counsel during official investigations.
The government restricts freedom of speech and freedom of the press, and the local media are censored to avoid criticising the government, government officials or royal families. Freedom of association and freedom of religion are also curtailed.

People are getting on with it here too.
A further 54,990 confirmed cases were announced by the government on Sunday.
The sharp rise in numbers is partly down to a lag in reporting over the holiday period but, according to Public Health England, is "largely a reflection of a real increase".

Yes- it’s deplorable. When I first started in MH, it wasn’t unheard of for asylums to have many families working for them.Harry wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 4:01 pmI wouldn't compromise my integrity by giving mates jobs on public money.
When I was working at a big hospital there were three very senior managers who were all mates, one took early retirement on a massive lump sum and big pension. Then when the dust had settled his mates bought him back as a consultant.
Cronyism is bad stuff eh.
I think Dido failing is another nail in the ‘private sector fix things’ mantra that some seen keen to sing though.

IME private sector companies which work government contracts are very efficient. They're just efficient at the wrong thing. Guess what it is they're actually good at
Given that there are experts for hire who will help you complete paperwork to show how you've 'done' what you were paid to do you can see the problem.
Fair boils my piss it does and its one reason I dislike working government funded R&D.

When you do, maybe you'll understand why over here some of us are being a bit more cautious.

We have to jump through all sorts of hoops to get access to certain limited areas of work, then write detailed bids explaining what we will do, how much it will cost and when we will deliver, etc.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 6:10 pm Fair boils my piss it does and its one reason I dislike working government funded R&D.
Then to see the way some contracts have been awarded beggars belief. The "don't have any ships" ferry was a classic.

Well we could always delay the start of this term by five weeks and only give them one week summer holiday,Mussels wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 4:27 pm If all kids were put back a year it would cause a huge gap in the career chain and then when the first year isn't put back there would be a glut of people entering the workplace with rocketing unemployment.
Then how will university students feel about having to pay out for an extra year with nothing to show for it except a missing years salary?
Then stand back and watch the teachers explode!!

I've seen a couple. Not IT, although I've seen cock-ups that affected me as an end user but in military procurement. But that was long ago. I'm sure it doesn't happen any more because people always learn from their mistakes. Don't they.

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
Agree 100% but you see it all the time. I'm seeing another wave of it at the moment as businesses get suckered into new 'IT magik' development methods. "This will give you a better, quicker, slicker system because we're using <insert hocus pocus> method this time around. Not like those previous w@nkers". What they seem to hear is "leave it with me, nah of course we don't need specifications, a method, involvement, feedback etc". I'm all for new ideas but IT systems owners (the client) need to get a grip - crap in = crap out. You have to take these projects by the scruff of the neck and manage the content, the project and then the technology. Assume all I T developers are faceless droids and you won't go far wrong.Harry wrote: ↑Mon Jan 04, 2021 5:10 am
One thing I've learned from implementing large scale IT systems like ERP, etc, is that the IT people know nothing about your business, they'll do exactly what you tell them without applying any logic to it themselves, so if you've got the wrong people giving the instructions then it's fucked. There have been some spectacular examples of this.

Even if they do learn, the next generation which knows better of course comes along and cocks things up in their own way. Plus ça change.
