Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
I’m uncomfortable with how easy it is for some to slip into quite ascerbic views on public sector workers. The issue here is public safety, so why we seem to want to off-set that with views on productivity is bizarre to me.
I’d argue that all teaching should move online now, but I’m fortunate in that despite having 5 kids, we have enough laptops and space to accommodate this and our own WFH. I dare say we are not representative of the population though.
In all honesty, I’d rather my kids were a bit thicker / had to repeat a year if it helped improve safety.
As for cronyism; £12bn for a failed app and a contract that went to a mate with no experience, and a government that didn’t want to support feeding the most disadvantaged. It’s a shambles. Labour or any other colour may well have done the same thing and they’d be entitled to the same derision too.

Where does this figure of £12bn keep coming from..the figures I've seen are all in the 10s of millions. Hardly pocket change, but 1000 times less none the less.

It’s just an observation that it’s easier to take the ‘shut everything down high ground’ when you’re not personally affected by a loss of business or income.
FWIW, I don’t think schools should go back. They should never have gone back in September. If all kids were put back a year it wouldn’t be the end of the world.

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
Pretty much that.
A friend of mine works for the environment agency helping write policy. During the last lockdown she got unlimited paid leave to look after her kids cause they couldn't go to nursery. She really can't understand why anyone would worry about whether or not kids can go to school.

And I'm not against feeding disadvantaged people, if other avenues are also being explored as well, like holding both parents accountable for feeding their children, so if the mum is working two jobs but the father just fucked off, then I'd put him on community service until he's paid his kids food bills off.
Test and Trace- at least back in October when it was reported by the press, was at £12bn. Most of that was for testing, but back then we’d not tested anywhere near the scale needed.
Dido Harding was the chum awarded the nod. No experience aside from fucking up a phone company.

TBF, there have been over 50 million tests conducted now. If you round it up and say the programme has cost £20bn that's £375 per test.
That seems a bit steep, but that money would have to cover everything from the plastic tubes of the test itself to designing and printing the leaflets they hand out.

My Mum did that at IBM.
It was rife at Rolls-Royce...topped off by the fact the pension scheme was final year earnings and we got paid overtime....

That was my opinion on teachers unions rather than teachers. I've seen good and bad teachers so I won't tar them all with the same brush.Taipan wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 1:12 pm That's a very low and unfair opinion of teachers IMO. Most teachers I know work above and beyond and put in many unpaid hours. The concern with the teachers and support staff I know is the new strain is apparently being carried and spread by children in a new way and a lot of said people are in support bubbles themselves or simply don't want exposure to a potentially killer virus without adequate protection/vaccination.

That sucks. I do struggle with career politicians. But people who become politicians for the 'right' reasons are few and far - busy doing what would make them the right person I supposeGedge wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 12:57 pm

I'd agree, but from a place where I've had no kids so, whilst I get the difficulties of dealing with the schools being shut and parents not being able to work, I really have no appreciation of actually doing itTaipan wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 1:12 pm

It does all seem to be a shit show - but again, that's with minimal knowledge from out of the country and no idea how it should be done

Yes, you're quite right, it is a shame you didn't name her. Also still irrelevant to infections increasing, and greater numbers of children being infected, etc.

If all kids were put back a year it would cause a huge gap in the career chain and then when the first year isn't put back there would be a glut of people entering the workplace with rocketing unemployment.
Then how will university students feel about having to pay out for an extra year with nothing to show for it except a missing years salary?

Worth noting that, last year, the government insisted that all schools have planning in place to go to online learning when necessary.Mussels wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 4:27 pm If all kids were put back a year it would cause a huge gap in the career chain and then when the first year isn't put back there would be a glut of people entering the workplace with rocketing unemployment.

Many students are pretty fed up with being charged £9k+ a year plus accommodation for completely online education.
