From this Twitter feed:
TL:DR- new B117 variant is likely going to bum us all into oblivion and kids are the biggest spreaders atm.
I’ve already decided not to send mine back
Tier systems do not work. We are not in lockdown by any stretch of the imagination and for all the whole garden centres and the like stay open as ‘essential business’ we are increasing risk.
Cummings really opened the door on doing what you please and this ( this) negligent government and their weak leadership have not been strong enough, not acted soon enough and pretty soon it will be tough.
Deepti is a respected lecturer in epidemiology and her Twitter feed is worth a read as it goes into just this detail ( read: she isn’t a Karen from Facebook).
My understanding from that thread is:
1. The new variant is vastly more transmissible than the previous versions. I don’t understand why, but I think it has something to do with mutating protein spikes to make it far easier to attach to humans.
2. The spread of this new variant correlates with school aged children being at school, where they struggle to keep distance and so on.
3. Children are due to go back to school next week. The real worry here is that we just won’t contain and it will spread to those more vulnerable - as well as knocking out a few kids ( for reasons I don’t understand) along the way.
4. We have to stop schools from reopening. If we don’t, then if you follow that thread, it maps the consequences. London boroughs are already stating primary schools should now remain closed, against government advice.
5. New variant then comes home with children and could further mutate. Etc.
Thread unroll : https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1344 ... 90464.html
London last night:
As for hating anything Tory- this is the PM that announced it would be acceptable to lose people. Compare that to JA from NZ where she publicly ally declared that no NZ’er should die from this. Regardless of the other bits in between- geography etc , it’s the attitude.
Plus, chumocracy and cronyism - the stuff that people like Iccy tolerate as political behaviour - billions and billions of £ pissed up the wall backing companies with zero proven track record or understanding in virus containment- I don’t care too much for that. Happy to keep stating that too, especially if the only rebuttable is ‘anti- Tory’.
Not accepting catastrophic mistakes have been made simply because people are defending a colour is quite frankly bizarre. And yes, I marched against Tony Blair and would like him thrown in jail for war crimes and don’t care what colour is at the helm, if they fuck us over, we should be capable enough to point it out.

He didn’t announce that though, it was suggested but unproven, Cummins may have said it in a meeting.
Thanks for the summary on the report, I am half thinking about keeping my little one at home.

ISTR BoJo saying that we would better off to "take it on the chin" WRT herd immunity during a TV interview.
That's the exact phrase he used IIRC. TBH though approximately 17 years have passed since March 2020 so I could be mistaken.
Edit: He did say it, but its pretty out of context. If anything he was saying the opposite really.

Check out Calizuela & NY figures. Both economies are pretty much completely shut down.demographic wrote: ↑Fri Jan 01, 2021 3:15 pm IIRC the UK has taken the biggest economic hit of pretty much the entire developed world with about the highest death count per capita.

Do you have a reputable link that says there was 3 months between diagnosis and death because as far as I knew it was 2 weeks?Wreckless Rat wrote: ↑Fri Jan 01, 2021 3:31 pm Also France has had more cases and fewer deaths. So the NHS has some blame imho, although I do believe the UK was over reporting to start with, as you could die 3months after testing positive and you’d be a covid death.

Also as there is no global standard for what constitutes a covid death, the stats although not meaningless, they aren’t directly comparable.

No pressure here, doll face. You started it. If you can’t stand up for your own words in a way that is anything other than acting like a bulldozer at a bowling alley, don’t say anything?

Harry wrote: ↑Fri Jan 01, 2021 4:57 pmAs with the rest of your NHS political dogma you've just entirely made that up.
You're back doing that thing where I say something, you latch onto it and throw it back at me.
I posted about NHS cronyism and political bullying. People get promoted based on your political affiliations and the amount of time you've spent there, not your competence. Stick around for long enough and you'll float to senior management, like a turd in a punchbowl.
But now you've thrown it back at me. Remember when you kept doing that a while back? It's a weird way to try and argue
You've become very moany and lacking in grace under pressure - I remember reading somewhere that grace under pressure is the definition of bravery - well anyway, you don't have any.
That's a low punch even by your antagonistic standards. And do at least try and find synonyms for 'bitter', the word is becoming your calling card.

OK, use statistics to prove that the UK hasn't done the worst then. That two island nations, both First World countries, have such widely different numbers of cases and deaths suggests that, even allowing for error, the UK isn't doing too well.

You can’t as there is no standard for reporting. The stats are totally pointless for direct comparison, I thought you were bright enough to grasp this simple fact.moth wrote: ↑Fri Jan 01, 2021 6:36 pmOK, use statistics to prove that the UK hasn't done the worst then. And a quick bit of Googling suggests that the Japanese population immune response is likely to have seen a sars like infection previously...
Seeing how they didn’t lock down or test fuck all, and their immune response means Japans stats compared to the uk are utterly irrelevant.

Also why pick Japan, apart from suiting your narrative of course. France and Spain, similar size population, with shared genetic history, and we know this virus is selective according to ethnic grouping/linage.
Now the stats are rather turned. France a far more spread population has more infections, fewer deaths {looks sternly at NHS}
Of course some people just want to blame the Tory party, which is fine, doesn’t make it right though.

Your man suggested that I was corrupt and supported cronyism, now that probably flies where you're from, but I value my integrity and I find his accusation absent of any charm whatsoever.
I often felt quite hard done by when I was on the coal face, getting shot at and dealing with whatever was thrown at me, having my leave cancelled so I could do public sector jobs when they were on strike, but I didn't cry like a little baby at Tony Blair - grace under pressure, some call it bravery. Do your job and don't whine like a child about it.
You two should get together and hug it out.
