Anecdotal evidence for all sort of weird stuff - I worked with a lady who had a car accident - airbag went off, as expected, and the force of the shunt flipped out her contact lens, off the airbag and back into her eye, she ended up losing the eye.

So what are we meant to take from that?
It goes right back to the root of the problem. If we hadn't let women drive, that poor lady would still have two good eyes.

Same with seat belts.
Don't know about belts, but voluntary helmet wearing was IIRC at about 95% before the legislation came in.

It's the only way to make a point sometimes on here, point out the stupidity of something, otherwise you get justifications of "well it's fluid innit".

Masks in Asda, no masks in the pub.
Do you have an opinion on it?
It's fairly easy, the government want to reduce infections without paying firms to stay closed, masks make little difference in a shop or on public transport.
What I don't understand is why you are so against it, I know travel restrictions annoy you but it feels like there's another reason.

Maybe it's about managing the level of risk and titrating the spread of the virus and it's effects. While accepting all measures have some degree of collateral impact. And the balancing of the two

Most people don't give a shit who dies, until it's fashionable, and then all of a sudden they want to act like enforcers for something they don't even understand.

But I suppose it's the reaction of real people that got to me, watching grown adults break down in tears because they have genuine anxiety about the masks and it's compounded because morons are making them feel guilty about it, like they are actively out trying to murder people because they have an issue with the masks.

"If you don't wear a mask you could be murdering people" - fuck off, most of everyone trotting out that shit does nothing to help their fellow man in any other circumstance.
It's all a bit silly, but given the choice of where to spend my money I will use the shops that try to police the use of masks. I understand there are genuine people who cannot comply, but there are a lot of people who pull that as an excuse rather than a genuine reason. Sod them, I don't want to be near them.

Masks have been pretty much consistently worn in my local Waitrose. While very rarely in the corner shop. Because the former is frequented by fritted toxics and the latter by sub-human scum.

I see what you mean absolutely but I like to think about it slightly differently ...

I'm doing what I'm told because (a) I'm not a scientist (b) I'm not privy to how governments interpret that data to get you to do stuff that strictly speaking isn't in line with the science, assuming they do that (c) I'm not convinced this is part of a manipulation plot, we're all sick of this and really want it to eff off right now (d) it's easier that way. There's loads of reasons I could decide for myself that I don't need to wear one - but who needs that hassle? I don't need to wage war on strangers, let alone family, friends and neighbours who have interpreted that data differently. There's a lady a few doors down who is severely immunocompromised, deaths's door stuff, and you can see her literally shit herself when anyone comes close - masked or not. You can't tell she's fecked, I just happen to know. I don't really want to be lecturing these sort of people about how wrong they might be. I can't even agree with my own missus, on a daily basis against changing information, on our mini group policy regards masks, meeting friends inside, going to restaurants etc.

How do you tell "the morons ... making them feel guilty ... because they have an issue with the masks " from "the morons that will literally not do anything the government says, despite "science", because it's all a plot and I'm not a sheep" ?

There's morons on both sides, they walk among us. My own s-i-l (60s)refused a vaccine because she "didn't believe in it" up until the point she was hospitalised and then claimed "nobody explained to me properly how and why the vaccine worked". Yeah because you get your information directly from the type of Facebook that is all about emotion-tugging memes and passing on "Amens". You're not even religious, you stupid cow.

How hard would it be for those who can't wear the close fitting mask to wear a different one? - like those plasticcy ones that a lot of shop staff are wearing and a badge to indicate there is a medical/mental reason for not wearing a surgical one? I dunno - but it seems easier to solve your own problem rather than try and solve everybody elses.

Well, if I was totally risk averse I'd stop biking and live in a bungalow so that I wouldn't fall down the stairs. ;)

As far as I can see (by the power of Google) there have been no deaths or hospitalisations caused by the Omicron variant.

The advice continues to be farcical and misleading.

Wife tested positive for covid beginning of November. Did her isolation ( as did one of my kids who was also positive).

Unfortunately, her the retina from her other eye detached Sunday. Need emergency surgery in London. Need a covid test as that’s the hospitals policy.

PCR positive. Hospital says surgery can’t go ahead. Luckily, I have a mate who’s a top eye surgeon at another hospital. He contacts surgeon ( who he regards as the best in the country ) at the hospital.

Surgeon says come in anyway as antibodies in blood so positive result likely for 90 days.

Hospital manager says no. Policy.

Surgeon tells them to get fucked and that my wife ( genuinely) risks going blind.

Wife and I sat in hospital for hours. She’s scared and can’t see. No idea what’s happening.

She’s in today for pre-op. Will be going back tomorrow for op.

Serco test and trace clowns just called her and have told her to self isolate for 10 days. We’ve pointed them to the government website.

They’ve threatened a fine.

Surgeon calls up and says ignore test and trace and ignore the ‘policy idiots’ who don’t understand post covid PCR.

As it stands, surgery is definitely happening tomorrow.

As cavalier as this all sounds, it’s been quite harrowing and I say that as someone well versed in NHS red tape. I’ve no idea how others are coping with it all and if I didn’t have a mate who could make that call…I’m not sure it would have got even this far.

Wife is asymptomatic for c19.

So if you have covid you can't have an emergency sight saving operation, that sounds fucked up.

Have to say Docca, as bad as it sounds I'd have been strongly tempted to just "throw" the PCR test! Now I know for future reference that maybe that's what's needed if I ever have a PCR test associated with an A&E admission
