The locals here are all wearing masks and the tourists are following suit.

I was at your local ASDA during the first lockdown. They had an in and out barrier to the front door yet let folk cross paths in the two door foyer

Face masks have been widely used as a protective measure against COVID-19. However, pre-pandemic empirical studies have produced mixed statistical results on the effectiveness of masks against respiratory viruses.
The implications of the studies' recognized limitations have not been quantitatively and statistically analyzed, leading to confusion regarding the effectiveness of masks. Such confusion may have contributed to organizations such as the WHO and CDC initially not recommending that the general public wear masks.
Here we show that when the adherence to mask-usage guidelines is taken into account, the empirical evidence indicates that masks prevent disease transmission: all studies we analyzed that did not find surgical masks to be effective were under-powered to such an extent that even if masks were 100% effective, the studies in question would still have been unlikely to find a statistically significant effect.
We also provide a framework for understanding the effect of masks on the probability of infection for single and repeated exposures. The framework demonstrates that more frequently wearing a mask provides super-linearly compounding protection, as does both the susceptible and infected individual wearing a mask.
This work shows
(1) that both theoretical and empirical evidence is consistent with masks protecting against respiratory infections and
(2) that nonlinear effects and statistical considerations regarding the percentage of exposures for which masks are worn must be taken into account when designing empirical studies and interpreting their results.

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
If I was to do a study on mask wearing I'd expect them to work, therefore I'm biased and I may well pick the first set of results that confirms my bias. This is why peer reviews are so important.
Their explanation of statistical relevance and poor control being the reason for previous failures is plausible but doesn't mean this one is right. Where control is poor you need enormous numbers to produce reliable results but even that may not be enough, you could compare the populations of two countries but if one uses masks and the other doesn't then masks are probably not the only big difference.
I'm not convinced they have this right but I can't be bothered to review the whole study so I'll sit on the fence.

A lot of the cases are being linked to a festival near Newquay.wheelnut wrote: ↑Wed Aug 25, 2021 7:55 amBut what? Lots of people, packed together at the festival and nearby venues. Alcohol. What could possibly go wrong?
We were near there last week. We wore masks in shops, etc, and kept distance where possible.

It's going to rumble on, we're going to get infected, build up a bit more immunity, get inefected again, build up more immunity until it becomes an irrelevence.
There were predictions that there would be less in the way of spikes and it would become more endemic.
There's going to be a raise in cases when the little darlings go back though.
They seem to be relucant to vacinate kids wholesale as well. Probably a good thing in my worthless opinion.

Most of us have had our vaccinations now so I presume the next stage is we catch it and hope the vaccine stops us getting too ill but its almost certain we'll catch it at somepoint. And as Wheelnut says hopefully each time our body gets better defenses. If you don't get deaded.
Torquay was fairly busy although less so than I expected. We wore masks when moving about shops/pubs/restaurants but I didn't over worry on the basis that whilst I'll try not to catch it the odds are I will at somepoint and I want to carry on with life as much as possible.

Yeah, there are a lot of folk who no longer give a shit.
My Da's care home rang today to say another member of staff has tested positive,so visiting is again cancelled for 10-14 days,by which time some of the other fuckers will have tested positive too.

I'm finding it very weird. You can wander into a lot of pubs, restaurants and supermarkets and it's back to normal - go in Waitrose, bang!, pandemic.

Not unexpected:

Some of the main tourist destinations are: The Bahamas, Belgium, British Virgin Islands, China, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Greece (including islands), Italy, Portugal (Madeira is on the green watchlist and The Azores will move to the green list), Saudi Arabia, Spain (including the Canary and Balearic Islands), the United States and Vietnam.

You were hoping France was going green?

Re: Covid restrictions - are you adhering or not?
I was just hoping there wouldn't be any more updates!! Although, for being in the uk for 57 hours, I'd kinda like not to have to buy a day 2 test!!!
Still, gonna tell him to wait till nearer the time!!!
