But officials have also seen positive tests among fully vaccinated people jump 46% over the past week, Davis said.
A total of 4,122 fully vaccinated people have now tested positive for the virus in L.A. County, or 0.09% of all vaccinated people. That’s up from 2,800 so-called breakthrough cases last week.

The increase in fully vaccinated people hospitalized was smaller, up to 213 from 195, and breakthrough deaths rose from 21 to 26. That’s 0.0045% of all inoculated people hospitalized, and fatalities among 0.0005%.

Davis said officials will monitor the rising cases among inoculated residents, but “at this point, I don’t make a lot of what we’re seeing in terms of fully vaccinated people”

Fears over the spread of the delta variant — which has been the most prominent in L.A. County since early June — prompted county public health officials to order everyone to wear masks in indoor public spaces again starting Saturday.
The county has seen a surge in cases this week, with single-day increases reaching levels not seen since March and several consecutive days with more than 1,000 new infections.

The best protection against the virus’ spread remains vaccination, but Davis said he’s disappointed that “overall vaccination numbers are lower than we need them to be.”

As of Thursday more than 5 million L.A. County residents were fully vaccinated, or 61% of all residents 16 and older. But fewer and fewer people are coming in to get their first shot each week, Davis said.

I’ve not delved into this thread for a long time. I found some of the discussion a little fixed -and nothing much seems to have changed.


It’s not about being dangerous ( delta variant) it’s about being more transmissible. More people = more people and that includes in beds, which impacts on things like surgical rotas.

Here, hospitals are getting busier. Primary care is at absolute breaking point and GPs are publicly quitting because they are so exhausted. One, ab ex commando in the armed forces left us this week because he was suicidal from the demand.

It’s bleak. I’m confident not so many will die from Covid, but it’s all those other illnesses that aren’t going to get a look in as our already threadbare health and care workforce get called upon again.

I’ll continue to wear my mask.

Depends what you mean by the NHS? If that’s primary care/GPs - they are already at and beyond overrun. Don’t forget it’s Covid related stuff, such as the mental health fallout.

Admissions are definitely up but nowhere near January- however the trend is going up, and we are about to allow public orgies from Monday.

Again though, it’s the wider impact on other treatments and delays.

We’re also seeing huge spikes in children’s services stuff, especially eating disorders.

My neighbour is a firearms copper, he's just been sent home for 10 days. His team are down to 5 at work now.

We've also had very little post last few days and apparently the local posties office have near 70% of staff in isolation.

We'll all be in lockdown by self isolation in 2 weeks

Forcing the vaccinated and those who already contracted COVID-19 to wear masks indoors is not backed by science and contradicts the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) has authority to enforce the order, but the underfunded/defunded Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will not expend our limited resources and instead ask for voluntary compliance.
We encourage the DPH to work collaboratively with the Board of Supervisors and law enforcement to establishment mandates that are both achievable and supported by science.

Since people who are vaccinated can be carriers and pass teh virus to others, why WOULDN'T you wear a mask indoors? I know you have hearing issues, so I accept that is different

But in general, why be so totally negative about masks when they help protect Others?

Since the pandemic started, when the government has referred to 'preventing the NHS being overwhelmed' it has meant secondary care such as hospital beds and ITU/critical care beds, and this is what I meant.

Admissions are definitely up but nowhere near January- however the trend is going up, and we are about to allow public orgies from Monday.

You weren’t very clear at all.I like you Irie, but you really struggle to see around the edges. If it’s not black and white, you won’t register it. How you measure capacity, how you measure staff wellbeing - how you measure pressure- it isn’t purely about bed usage ( which is also up).

So in black and white terms, we don’t have the same numbers as January. However, the numbers are on the up and the same exhausted staff are now up against it again.

Also, those life lengthening operations and procedures that take place all year round are again being stood down. The acuity of this untreated cohort goes up and they can become more acutely unwell and need emergency care…which is again a struggle because we are filling up.

Iccy: shit news about your BIl. Best wishes for safe passage and a speedy recovery.

Because LA County DPH has gone rogue & is now ignoring the CDC, Fauci & everyone else's guidelines/science etc. The chances of a vaccinated person infecting an unvaccinated person are pretty much zero.. & it's not MY problem if THEY choose not to get the vaccine.

Local media is now using percentages instead of actual numbers to make the issue to be much bigger than it really is. *50% higher than two days ago* sounds worse than "1000 unvaccinated people in a population of 10,400,000"

I also have diminished lung function from a previous bout of pneumonia, can get out of breath just standing at the sink doing washing up some days. I think they came up with at least 15 exemptions for wearing a mask. I'm covered by 3 or 4 of them... but even if I wasn't, I still wouldn't comply/obey at this point.

Yesterday, NY Governor Cuomo suggested that people should still wear masks to prevent transmission of the common cold...That went over well.
