BMW 135 if you don't need it to be very big (will fit four average size adults quite comfortably) 10k buys you a very tidy one and £500 gives you 350bhp+ and 550ft/lb+ if you want it - they are a reasonably fun and capable 300bhp & 400ft/lb ish as standard.

I think he might have had a little accident.

I had a 2002 Saxo VTR (the 8v not the 16v VTS). 109bhp in a car made of recycled kitkat wrappers. It went quite well. I had to drive it with both knees level with the top of the steering wheel.
