Re: Pirelli Scorpion STR tyres

@mangocrazy, the wheels are designed to be tubeless and warranted by Rally Raid. I don't have any concerns. As said, tubes are a PITA and for travel I just want to carry a tubeless kit and a mini inflator. The spokes are beefy so I don't expect these wheels to go out of true.

Pirelli Scorpion STR tyres

Thought I'd share a quick review on these after fitting with my new wheels. The stock CB500x came with Dunlop trailmax tyres which were OK on the road but only worked on hardpack dirt off road. Useless in mud and vague on gravel which accounts for a lot of the trails that I ride so they had to go. I...

Re: Winter project

I parked this project over the winter as I only had the wheels to fit and didn't see the point in fitting them during the bad weather. As things have turned spring like, it was time to finish what I started. So today was wheel swap day. A straight forward job to fit the rally raid wheels in place of...

Re: Is there a bike you want 'someone' to make but they don't ?

For me a Honda Africa Twin 750 would be my wish bike. Parallel twin engine, bike weight (kerb) under 200kgs, 200mm travel - fully adjustable, a 19" front wheel and a 20L tank. Not loaded with electronics either so it keeps the cost under £10K. There are always rumours of a middleweight adventur...

Re: Winter project

Thanks Taipan  I forgot one detail. RR provide a new side stand that is longer to compensate for the extra travel. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50709573742_33c25d1cd0_z.jpg Easy swap but a spring puller is recommended as the spring tension only just let me attach it after pulling it ...

Re: Winter project

Yesterday was suspension swap over. Very straightforward as it turned out. I started with the forks and removed the legs to drain the oil and get the internals out. The instructions from Rally Raid are clear and easy to follow and if you have the tools needed it is an easy diy job. There is a big di...

Re: Winter project

Made a start on the mods today. Thought I'd start with the easy stuff so fitted some Renthal fatbars and the Barkbusters. Took a couple of hours including lots of alignment adjustments and moving controls/mirrors etc. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50686988521_609512e3b8_z.jpg https://live.stat...

Re: Winter project

These wheels were designed to be tubeless, which I prefer to tubes. This is the info' from Rally Raid. We have designed, developed and manufactured our own heavy-duty, tubeless spoked wheels for the new Honda CB500X, based on our rally & adventure experiences. These are an improvement over the t...

Been looking at these on youtube. Has gone to the top of my wanted list. V4s would be my choice, with cast wheels and road tyres.

This is how it looks right now. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50180840263_e1de704c50_z.jpg I'll post the after photo once done. That's a good point about not making my first attempt at tyre fitting on new wheels. I'll save the trial for the cast wheels when it's time to replace the dunlops. @d...

Winter project

So, now as the weather is grim and my enthusiasm for riding is only appearing on the better days, I have decided to add more Rally Raid upgrades to the CB500x so it will be ready for next years trips. This week I took delivery of: Level 2 suspension kit, spoked wheels and Pirelli scorpion tyres. Als...

Re: Fitting new tyres

Thanks all for the info'.
I think I'm going to struggle without the proper kit. I'll take the wheels with the existing tyres to the m/c shop and get them to swap them out.

Re: Fitting new tyres

Thanks chillitt. I don’t have a bead breaker, was hoping that standing on the sidewalls would pop them into the well. ??
To inflate after fitting do you need a sudden blast of air to blow them onto the bead? I have an airshot for fitting my mtb tyres and wondered if that would be enough volume.

Fitting new tyres

I've ordered some new tyres for my 500x and would like to fit them myself.
But, do motorcycle wheels need balancing after fitting tyres? If yes, can it be done by a home mechanic?

Had a run out around the Calder Valley this morning. Cool temps but really bright and sunny. Can't beat the scenery!

Re: Glove recommendations

Update: After three weeks and 6-700 miles I am back where I started. The tips have begun to peel and I now have a sticky mess on the fingers. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50221526497_7cdff0c230_c.jpg So the search goes on and I would say don't bother with these stick on patches for motorcycle...

Re: Rally Raid engine guard on a Honda CB500x

Don't know if there's any finance deals but they have knocked £500 off the list price. So they're about £5500 now. Running costs are low, insurance etc and they do about 75 to the gallon. They're a great little bike for buzzing around on or commuting but capable of touring too. Stick on some more of...

Re: Rally Raid engine guard on a Honda CB500x

I know what you mean about the screen. I tried low position, high position and there was too much buffeting still. I put spacers between the mounts and the screen and it still wasn't right. I was going to get an aftermarket screen and then decided to try a cheap spoiler off ebay. Less than £20 and t...

Re: Rally Raid engine guard on a Honda CB500x

*Update* Having looked at the photos yesterday I decided I didn't like the look of the silver cat guard. So today I removed it (easily done, two screws) and keyed it up with a scotchbrite pad. Then primer and PU automotive gloss black before refitting this evening. Now that looks better! https://liv...
