No logic to it, but I'd forgive Mclaren for small faults but not Tesla. Probably based on how I perceive Musk, mostly negatively.
Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?

Yes, but normally ones that actually have character. If something feeds the soul a little through its beauty or performance then you can forgive it its little foibles. That goes especially for older cars.cheb wrote: Sat Dec 26, 2020 1:52 pm Are car manufacturers allowed to claim 'character'?

Modern cars, perhaps more so for cars like the Tesla, are often appliances and should just work perfectly.

Tesla build quality is pretty dire... McLaren still can't build a car that doesn't suffer from windshields cracking just sitting in the garage.. & now they've started using even thinner glass.wheelnut wrote: Sat Dec 26, 2020 1:22 pm The faults with mine have been with the TFT display. Lots of Tesla owners are reporting things like paint issues, panel gaps, panels coming loose, which are pretty basic things. As more customers road test their cars for them though, I’m sure they’ll get better.

Not at the prices Tesla and McLaren ask. See also Range Rover.cheb wrote: Sat Dec 26, 2020 1:52 pm Are car manufacturers allowed to claim 'character'?

They had to launch something on the first flight to get the weight right, even if it was just a concrete cube. On the first ever flight of a design they don't tend to launch commercial, or even free, payloads.slowsider wrote: Sat Dec 26, 2020 4:30 pm Nope. It got them an awful lot of PR didn't it? You may have also noticed during the live coverage (if you watched it) that pretty much the first thing they said was "if you're interested in a career in at SpaceX, go to....".
I would hazard a guess the PR gun wasn't aimed in your direction

So I can throw you plastic rubbish in the sea, or pollute a pristine river, as long as it’s for a bit of PR. Gotcha

Re: Would you have an electric car if you had the money for a new car and were in the market for one?
Sort of related to electric cars. Boxing day was the first day ever when wind power contributed an average of >50% to UK power generation over a 24hr period.
https://www.independent.co.uk/environme ... 79523.html
Now obviously it's a bit blowy out at the moment, but that's fairly rapid progress. UK installed wind generation capacity is set to pretty much double by 2026 based on farms that are already approved or have started construction.
Little way to go before we match the Danes though, they had their first >100% wind powered day (I.e. powering all of Denmark and selling some excess for 24hrs) in 2019.

On the peninsula I saw acres and acres of solar panels all over the country. But they are (Were) frowned upon for houses .Mr. Dazzle wrote: Mon Dec 28, 2020 5:09 pm Sort of related to electric cars. Over here they're building more and more wind turbines.
